School Children Protest Irish Cement’s Mungret Burning Decision

School children from Mungret Primary School in Limerick are staging a lunchtime demonstration in protest over the EPA’s decision to allow Irish Cement burn alternative fuels in a nearby factory.

The environmental regulator has given the company the go-ahead to burn 90,000 tonnes of materials including used tyres, plastics and animal waste tissue, subject to a number of conditions.

Over 4,500 people expressed concern over the plans, and Clare County Council is to appeal the decision, following a request by Mayor of Clare Councillor Cathal Crowe who’s concerned about the impact on nearby towns in the county.

Special education teacher at Mungret Primary School, James Tuohy claims the practice isn’t safe for those in surrounding areas.
