The ESB has lodged a planning application with Clare County Council for a development at its Moneypoint Power Station in West Clare.
The state utility is seeking permission to construct synchronous condenser – which is a type of generator – in a fenced off compound on a site of less than one hectare there.
It comes as more than 100 workers are set to be let go at Moneypoint next month, which is a more than 50% cut in the total workforce.
The ESB says it would not be appropriate to comment on the development as it’s in the planning stage, while a decision is due by November 20th.
This week, the ESB confirmed that Moneypoint staff have accepted a proposal that aims to ensure an ongoing operation at the West Clare coal-burning plant.
