A dedicated new unit for victims of sexual assault in Clare is being set up by Gardaí.
The Protective Services Unit aims to allow Garda provide a consistent approach in the investigation of such crimes, and comes as figures released at this week’s meeting of Clare’s Joint Policing Committee reveal a 150% increase in the number of rapes reported here this year.
There have been 10 recorded so far, up from four last year, while a significant number of these are said to be historic in nature.
Clare’s Chief Superintendent Seán Colleran says people are becoming more comfortable in reporting such crimes, which can only be a good thing in terms of tackling the issue.
