Cabinet Approves Legislation For Controversial River Shannon Pipeline

Legislation allowing for the development of the controversial 1.3 billion euro pipeline which will pump water from the River Shannon to Dublin have been approved by cabinet.

The project, which is backed by Irish Water, will allow for water to be pumped from Parteen in Clare to supply urban areas in the capital where water levels are critically low, as well as the Midlands.

The Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy brought a memo to cabinet this week, proposing the drafting of a Water Environment Abstractions Bill, which will allow for the licensing of large-scale water abstractions in the state.

The project has been opposed by many, who fear it could have a detrimental impact on the environment here.
