Morning Focus – Monday 06/01/20

Today on Morning Focus, Clare Ladies Football Captain, Laurie Ryan, joined us in studio to warn our listeners of the dangers of concussion and why it shouldn’t be undervalued.

For weeks after what seemed like a simple on-field collision, Laurie was experiencing painful headaches, lack of concentration and fatigue.

The Clare football star took nearly two months to get the sign off to play after suffering a concussion in a knock last May.

If you missed our interview with Laurie you can catch it below:

Today we returned to our series on addiction as we’re speaking to different members of the team at Bushypark Treatment Centre in Ennis.

Last week, we spoke with the new CEO of Clarecare Caitríona Lavelle who gave us an overview of what the not-for-profit does in a general sense and today, we found out more about what actually happens at Bushypark.

For those who may not know, Bushypark is a residential addiction treatment centre operated by Clarecare which offers a wide range of supports and services.

Some of them were outlined by the centre’s Manager Margaret Nash, who spoke with Clare FM’s James Mulhall, if you missed it you can listen back below:

Before that, on the show, we heard from the Mayor of Clare, Cllr Cathal Crowe as he has criticised the holding of a commemorative event remembering the Royal Irish Constabulary.

The force, which policed Ireland under British rule, is due to be commemorated at an event in Dublin Castle on Friday week, which will be attended by Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris.

As Mayor of Clare, Fianna Fail Cllr and General Election candidate Cathal Crowe was invited to attend – but has declined, saying it is “historical revisionism gone too far”.

You can listen back to the interview below:

Next on the show we spoke to John Cushnahan, Former Alliance Party of NI Leader and Fine Gael MEP as talks to restore power-sharing at Stormont get back underway today with a week until Julian Smith’s deadline.

If a deal is not reached in Belfast by January 13th, the Northern Ireland Secretary is likely to call fresh Assembly elections.

The executive collapsed almost three years ago – and previous attempts to restore the institutions have been unsuccessful.

Sergeant Tríona O’Rourke joined us next on the show to seek your help in solving local crimes.

And to wrap up today’s show we took a look back at a very busy sporting weekend for Clare’s sporting sides with Clare FM’S Sideline View Presenter, Eoin Brennan.

Clare’s hurlers ended their Munster Hurling League campaign with defeat to Limerick while Colm Collins’ footballers overcame Waterford in the McGrath Cup.

The U20’s footballers were also victorious yesterday while Clare’s Oscar Traynor side secured a home quarter-final fixture and two Clare Rugby teams celebrated wins in the Munster Junior Cup.
