Morning Focus – Tuesday 04/02/20

Today on Morning Focus, we were joined on the line by Dr John Hillery Former President of the College of Psychiatrists as we mentioned how the College is urging General Election Candidates to be cautious with the language they use while discussing Mental Health.

As the terms they use can create hurt, further stigma and misinformation around mental illness disorders and distress.
While the College welcomes references to developing Mental Health Services, mental health promotion and other proposals around mental health over the next five to six days of intense pre-general election activity it asks that they (candidates) refrain from using stigmatising and inappropriate terms related to mental health and illness.

The current situation regarding the burning of smoky coal is bad, with some areas even being protected by the ban.

Incoming Vice President for the Ennis Chamber, Darragh McAllister, joined us in studio next as he has highlighted how there is no sign for the Wild Atlantic Way present at Shannon Airport. There’s a sign for the Wild Atlantic way at Kilcolgan but none at Shannon Airport – so when tourists arrive there is no inclination of the Wild Atlantic Way being right at their feet.

On a different note, Tom Flanagan joined us on the line to tell us all about Folk Radio, which is a temporary radio station transmitting from the X-PO in Kilnaboy, Co. Clare, from 3rd February. Conceived as an artist-led public art project, Folk Radio is the culmination of an 18-month collaboration with the communities of the X-PO, its volunteers, participants and audiences. The project comprises of over 42 hours of original broadcasts with 46 independent programmes and contributions from over 70 participants.

To finish Morning Focus today, Clare County Dog Warden Frankie Coote joined us in studio for an Animal Welfare Update.
