Clare’s Independent TD is no longer in the running to become the next Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil.
Michael McNamara this week expressed interest in standing for the role for a limited period of six months, because he wanted to lead reform, but said he’d support other candidates who would agree to carry out his reform agenda.
He wants to see a number of changes, including in the system of parliamentary questions, and the use of the ‘money message’ that has been used by government to block legislation when there is a cost to the exchequer.
Deputy McNamara today says that having spoken at length with Denis Naughten, he believes the former Communications Minister will implement badly needed reform in the position.
