Clare Farmers Representative Calls For EU Market Supports For Beef Sector

The Cratloe-based General Secretary of the ICSA is calling for EU market supports to be drawn down to guide beef farmers through the COVID-19 pandemic.

It follows the closure of all McDonald’s restaurants in Ireland last evening, including its branches in Ennis and Shannon, a move that is hitting Irish beef farmers in the pocket.

Every month, between 10 and 15,000 Irish cattle are sold to be used in McDonald’s produce and concern is now being expressed about how the sector will stay afloat should this be a long-term measure.

Eddie Punch says without assistance from the EU, the price of beef could plummet which would dessimate their industry.
