ESB Boss Says Moneypoint Faces “Real Risk Of Closure”

The ESB’s Chief Executive says Moneypoint faces a real risk of closure.

Pat O’Doherty has told the Irish Independent that the West Clare Power Station has few options ahead of 2025, when coal burning is due to end there under the goals of the Climate Action Plan.

The coal fired plant, which was once the top contributor to the state’s electricity needs has been operating well below capacity in recent times and hundreds of staff have been laid off.

It’s the first time that there has been any indication about the future of the plan, with the ESB officially saying it’s seeking a new ‘low-carbon’ role for Moneypoint.
