Dara Calleary Nominated Agriculture Minister As Martin Faces Questions Over Cowen Sacking

Dara Calleary has been named as the new Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

Jack Chambers has been named the new government Chief Whip while Sean Fleming has been promoted to Junior Minister in the Department of Finance.

It comes as Micheál Martin faced increased scrutiny in the Dáil over his sacking of Barry Cowen last night.

Opposition leaders have criticised the Taoiseach after his decision to sack Barry Cowen as Minister for Agriculture.

The issue has dominated leaders’ questions in the Dáil this lunchtime.

While yesterday’s Dáil proceedings saw demands for questions to be answered by Barry Cowen, today saw questions asked about the judgement of Micheál Martin

In a series of exchanges, Micheál Martin defended his handling of the crisis, including his government’s voting down proposals yesterday afternoon that would have brought Mr Cowen into the Dáil to answer questions on his drink driving offence.

The Taoiseach said he wanted Barry Cowen to do so voluntarily and when he refused he was sacked.

While opposition parties have been quick to criticise Barry Cowen, and the Taoiseach, there’s been limited reaction so far from their government partners.

Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey said this morning that it’s time to move on and focus on matters affecting the country.

Speaking earlier, a former Clare Fianna Fáil Minister said he believe some within Fianna Fáil will be angered by the Taoiseach’s decision to sack Barry Cowen.

Tony Killeen admits Micheál Martin’s decision came as a surprise.
