Retailers Hopeful Clare Shoppers Will Obey Mandatory Face Masks Rule

Ennis Chamber President Hopes Shoppers Will Comply With New Facemask Rules

The President of Ennis Chamber is hopeful that shoppers will adhere to new rules making face masks mandatory in retail settings.

From today, face coverings are compulsory in shops, supermarkets and shopping centres and it will be up to individual retailers to enforce the rule.

Anyone who refuses to wear one will face fines of up to 2,500 euro and time in prison.

Retail staff will be required to wear one unless there’s a partition or space of two metres between them and customers, while the rule will not apply to children under 13 or anyone who can’t wear one due to physical or mental incapacity.

Ennis Chamber President, Allen Flynn says his members hope that customers will follow the rules:

The Justice Minister has said Gardaí will be called as a last resort, if people refuse to wear masks inside shops or shopping centres.

Duncan Smith from Ennis-based lobby Group, Retail Excellence says retailers have the power to call Gardai over non compliance – but don’t expect they’ll have to:
