Clare Sees Increase In Births Despite National Fall

Clare has bucked the national trend of a fall-off in births.

While the number of children born between January and March was down by 10 per cent nationally, families in the Banner County welcomed an increased total of 356 new children in the same time.

189 girls and 167 boys were born to mums living in Clare in the first three months of the year.

The total of 356 is the highest quarterly figure recorded here since 2017.

236 deaths were registered here during the same timeframe, which by and large comes before the COVID pandemic.

14 of those lost their lives to dementia or alzheimer’s, while the CSO says 12 died through what it describes as ‘external causes.’
