12,000 In Clare Now Receiving Unemployment Benefits

Over 12,000 people are now receiving some form of unemployment benefit in Clare.

That’s despite the number of people on the Live Register in this county being at its lowest level since the beginning of the pandemic.

5,176 people across Clare were on the Live Register at the end of last month according to the Central Statistics Office – the lowest level since COVID-19 hit Irish shores back in March.

Ennis has seen 57 people leave its dole queues in the past month, with the total number of people claiming the payment in this area now standing at 2,832 – half of Clare’s total – but this fall is negated by slight rises in Ennistymon and Tulla.

However, level 5 restrictions have seen the number of people claiming the Pandemic Unemployment Payment here shoot up to over 7,200 – meaning over 12,000 are claiming some form of unemployment payment as of last week.

Thousands more across Clare are receiving further government support in the form of the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme, which has recently replaced the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme.

County-by-county data on this is not yet available.
