There are now just seven weeks until the Brexit transition period ends and Britain finally exits the European Union for good.

Discussions between the EU’s Chief Brexit Negotiator Michel Barnier and his UK counterpart David Frost will take place today and are expected to continue next week.

It’s understood there are obstacles remaining over issues like fisheries and governance.

But already, though a full Brexit remains on the horizon, it’s already having an impact.

The Ennis-based President of the Irish Road Haulage Association, Eugene Drennan, says his members are already seeing delays in crossing the border with goods.

Farmers in this county and elsewhere have long been concerned about the prospect of a no deal heading into 2021.

It’s understood the option of flying calves to destinations on the European continent is now being closely considered due to potential disruption to normal shipping routes.

ICSA General Secretary and Cratloe farmer Eddie Punch believes the UK are being reckless by not committing to a deal.

The impact of a no deal Brexit on Ireland would be ‘disastrous’ but would be even worse for the UK according to one Fine Gael TD.

The party’s spokesman on European Affairs, Deputy Neale Richmond, has this message for EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier and the British Government.
