Clare County Council looks poised to make a formal call for every healthcare worker in the country to be awarded a one off, tax-free cash bonus to recognise their work during the pandemic.
Lisdoonvarna Fine Gael Councillor Joe Garrihy is raising the idea, which would grant a €500 bonus to every health professional.
Any such plan would likely cost the state tens of millions of euro, with nearly 80,000 nurses and midwives currently registered nationwide.

But Councillor Garrihy believes the government should find a way to ensure the bonus is paid.
