Clare Engineer Mick Ryan Posthumously Awarded Humanitarian Of The Year

Lahinch engineer Micheál Ryan, who lost his life in an Ethopian Airlines flight last year, has been named Humanitarian of the Year at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Micheál, who worked for the United Nations World Food Programme, was honoured for his work with the organisation by the Irish Red Cross over eighteen months after he was among 157 people who died when their Boeing 737 Max Aircraft crashed shortly after take-off from Addis Ababa.

Accepting his award on his behalf, his wife Naoise said her husband and others on that flight died on what should have been a safe commercial flight, because a plane, known to be defective, had been allowed to remain in service.

She paid tribute to Micheál saying he had fought to protect lives, that safety was his priority and every life mattered.
