€800,000 Increase In Funding For Clare’s Local & Regional Roads

Clare will receive an increase of almost €1 million in funding to improve its local and regional roads in 2021.

The €25.2 million package forms part of an overall fund of more than half a billion euro announced by the Department for Transport.

Clare’s allocation from the national investment programme for local and regional roads is an increase of around €800,000 on 2020 – though it’s still more than a million euro less than the funding provided for this county back in 2019.

Almost half of the funding – over €11 million – will go towards restoration improvements on secondary roads across Clare.

€4 million of the investment, which is being made available to Clare County Council, will go directly towards the Shannon Crossing project, including the Killaloe bypass – though it’s a fraction of the total project cost, which is estimated to be in the region of €69 million.

A further €579,000 has been earmarked for walking and cycling infrastructure here, along with €879,000 for drainage works.

€100,000 has been allocated for a specific improvement grant towards the R352 Tulla Road.

The funding is in addition to Clare County Council’s own budgeted finances for road improvements in 2021.
