The National Public Health Emergency Team is due to make its recommendations to Government this afternoon.

There’s a wide understanding across government and NPHET that people need some hope after months of Level 5, but the increasing transmission of the virus is likely to lead to a very cautious recommendation.

It’s anticipated there will be a big focus on outdoor activities.

The 5km travel rule is expected to be relaxed, outdoor meet-ups will be allowed between two households and sport may return for children, while golf and tennis could also be in the mix.

Clare’s Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe believes we’re a long way off lifting travel restrictions completely, but he does believe a slight easing is needed.

The Chief Clinical Officer with the HSE says people’s mental health will have to be considered with the easing of any COVID restrictions.

Colm Henry says they have to balance the risk of covid with people’s mental health.

Dr Mary Favier is a member of NPHET and Covid-19 advisor to the Irish College of General Practitioners.

She believes safe outdoor activity could be facilitated.
