Fears Expressed That Economically Disadvantaged Clare Students Being ‘Locked Out’ Of Education System

The Society of St Vincent de Paul is expressing fears that some students from poorer backgrounds in Clare are being ‘locked out’ of the education system.

It comes as the charity submits a series of proposals to reform the SUSI third level grant scheme, which they say is not fit for purpose.

A report prepared for the Department of Public Expenditure last year revealed that the percentage of students based in Clare receiving the highest rate of SUSI grant possible is significantly below the national average.

SVP Social Justice Policy Officer, Marcella Stakem, believes high achieving students in this county from low socio economic backgrounds are being left behind.
