Co-Ordinator For Clare Immigrant Support Centre Says Pandemic Not An Excuse For Changes In Direct Provision

The Co-Ordinator for Clare’s Immigrant Support Centre says the ongoing pandemic is not an excuse to delay proposed changes to the direct provision system.

It comes amid concerns raised by the Irish Refugee Council about the number of people still being required to share a bedroom with non-family members during the pandemic.

More than 1,800 people in direct provision were assigned a shared bedroom as of the end of last month.

Orla Ni Eili, Co-Ordinator for the Clare Immigrant Support Centre, says changes to the system – including the phasing out of direct provision by 2024 as planned – should not slow down because of current restrictions.
