Incoming Clare Mayor Will Not Sign Off On County Development Plan That Dezones ‘Too Much’ Land

The incoming Mayor of Clare says he will not sign off on the County Development Plan if it proposes to dezone what he says would be ‘too much’ land.

Work is continuing on the plan, which will run from 2022 to 2028, with concerns having been raised that the plan could, in its current form, lead to the depopulation of rural areas of Clare.

The State’s National Planning Framework may lead to certain land that does not have access to services such as wastewater treatment not being zoned for future development.

New Mayor of Clare and Sixmilebridge-based Independent Councillor PJ Ryan, who was voted into the position on Friday, believes rural areas will need increased populations to thrive.
