Council’s ‘Hands Tied’ Over Hedgecutting During Summer Months

The Cathaoirleach of the Killaloe MD insists the Council’s hands are tied when it comes to hedge cutting over the summer period.

It comes as callers to Clare FM have expressed concerns about the dangers being posed by overhanging trees and overgrown bushes on some county routes.

Under section 40 of the Wildlife Act, local authorities and landowners are restricted from hedge cutting between March 1st and August 31st, so unless it has to be carried out for public health and safety reasons, it should be done outside this period.

Bodyke Councillor Joe Cooney put a motion forward two years ago to shorten this period, but it wasn’t agreed to and he says it’s unfortunate that more can’t be done.
