Knockalisheen Resident Says Six Month Limit On Asylum Application Decisions Should Be Imposed

A resident at Knockalisheen direct provision centre says a six month statutory limit on asylum application decisions should be implemented by the Irish government.

It follows criticism from the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission that a white paper on ending direct provision by 2024 is already behind schedule.

Recommendations from an expert group had included extending the right to work to asylum seekers, though advocacy groups claim these proposals have already been ‘watered down’.

Knockalisheen resident Bulelani Mfaco believes further resources need to be allocated to asylum applications to clear current backlogs.
