A Clare Government TD is mooting the possibility of flights taking off between Shannon and Saudi Arabia after holding preliminary conversations with the country’s ambassador.
It comes as the airport continues to attempt to ‘intensify’ its recovery from the pandemic, with temporary Aer Lingus Heathrow routes operational, and United Airlines scheduled to resume transatlantic traffic in the Spring.
At present, Ireland’s only air connections with the Middle East are via Dublin.
Shannon Group has told Clare FM it’s ‘constantly working with airlines all over the world and exploring all opportunities to secure new air connectivity for Shannon’.
Meelick-based Fianna Fail Deputy Cathal Crowe, who’s his party’s spokesperson on aviation, says a connection between Shannon and Riyadh could capitalise in the Midwest airport’s pre-clearance facilities to the US.
