It’s claimed there was “widespread shock and disbelief” throughout an East Clare community following the death of a young serving soldier.
The funeral takes place this weekend of 24-year-old Gerard McMahon, from Ogonnelloe, who lost his life in a tragic accident in Spain earlier this month.
He was a member of the 1st Infantry Battalion in the Dún Uí Mhaolíosa Barracks in Galway and was also part of the 63rd Infantry Group in Syria.

He’ll be laid to rest on Sunday following mass in St. Mary’s Church, Ballyloughnane, Ogonnelloe at 1 o’clock.
Local Councillor Joe Cooney has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that the whole community is in mourning following Gerard’s passing.
