Element 6 head to LRC

Both sides in the Element Six dispute enter exploratory talks at the Labour Relations Commission today.

The aim of the negotiations at the LRC are aimed at securing better redundancy terms for workers being let go at the Shannon Plant.

In July the company announced it was ending manufacturing with the loss of 370 jobs but then agreed to a rescue package drawn up by local management to save 160 of the jobs.

However workers were unhappy with the redundancy package being offered to them and called for better terms and conditions but senior officials in the company refused to budge on the issue.

Last week the company sought the intervention of the Labour Relations Commission to try and break the deadlock.

Management accepted the offer on Tuesday and unions followed suit yesterday evening despite their concerns about what they say is the mandate of local management to engage meaningfully.
