New initiative for Ennis Cluster of Parishes

The number of masses held in the cluster of parishes around Ennis could be curbed in the coming months.

It’s all part of a new initiative announced by the Bishop of Killaloe Dr Willie Walsh in response to the falling number of priests.

The move also follows the untimely death of Fr. Michael McNamara.

This new pastoral initiative being implemented by Doctor Willie Walsh relate to the cluster of parishes of Doora Barefield, Clarecastle Ennis and Quin.

They already work close together and in order to further promote this Fr. Jerry Carey, who has been Adm. at St. Joseph’s Church in Ennis for the past ten years, is moving to Doora-Barefield.   Fr. John McGovern who has been curate in Clarecastle since August 2002 is taking over from Fr. Carey at St. Joseph’s.

Speaking to the pastoral councils of Doora Barefield and Roslevin recently, Bishop Walsh explained the death of Fr. Michael means that there will be one priest less working in the cluster area.

He also told them that in the coming months the number, location and times of Masses in all four parishes will be reviewed.

Dr Walsh also told them each parish will retain its identity and the residing priest will give priority to the needs of his parishioners but will also take responsibility for some special aspect of pastoral care in another parish.
