Local authority denies building boom contribution to floods

Clare County Council has insisted that the building boom in Ennis did not contribute to the unprecedented flooding in the town last month.

Locals have expressed concerns that the surge in new housing estates close to flood plains caused some of the recent flooding and led to serious problems never seen in the town in the past.

But the Engineers report put to the council states that all developments were in line with the Ennis Flood study of 2002 which set out proper standards for building and County Manager Tom Coughlan says the guidelines were adhered to fully in subsequent developments.
