Flood Works Bill nearing €700, 000

The flood relief response in Clare has cost almost 700,000 euro so far.

The revelation was made at a special meeting of Clare County Council last night where councillors discussed the flooding crisis in Ennis, South East Clare, Sixmilebridge, and North Clare, and demanded urgent measures to prevent such problems in future.

Presenting a full report on the major flooding events, The Clare County Manager said the council has applied to the Department of the Environment for a full re-imbursement of the 659,000 euro spent on the flood response to date.

Tom Coughlan said it’s now a matter of waiting to see what the government will provide

Councillors have also voiced concerns about the funding needed to carry out remedial works to local roads, as well as protection works on local rivers and flood plains in the aftermath of the flooding crisis.

A separate application is likely to be made to fund such projects, but Shannon Councillor Patricia McCarthy expressed the fear that central government may not even cover the full costs incurred by the council so far.
