Residents across Clare face a second week of water shortages as the county council continues to repair burst pipes and leaks.
Demand for water increased by 20 percent since the big freeze, leaving supplies at critically low levels in some reservoirs, forcing the local authority to implement enforced shut water shut offs
Over the weekend the Council repaired a large water main which burst in Shannon but shut off will have to continue in and around the town to allow the level of Clonmoney reservoir to rise
The supply will be off from 12pm until 5pm today but public taps will be available once again at a number of locations
Senior Engineer at Clare County Council Sean Ward says the shut offs are necessary to allow the Clonmoney reservoir receives treated drinking water from the Castle Lake water treatment works near Kilmurray, which supplies water to Shannon and several surrounding areas.
He added that since the start of the big freeze demand for water has increased by more than 20 per cent, and the Castle Lake treatment plant, even using spare capacity, has not been able to keep up with the increased demand and As a result the reservoirs at Moygalla and Clonmoney reached critically low levels in early January.
In order to combat this Clare County Council was forced to reduce demand by a combination of shut-offs of supply, and finding and repairing leaks.
Work on repairs leaks across the county will continue this week but it also means further shut offs right across the county and full details of these are available on the County Council’s website, www.clarecoco.ie or on Clare FM throughout the day.
