Shannon Airport passenger drop hits Mid West Region hard

 

Falling passenger numbers at Shannon Airport have seen County Clare and the Mid-West suffering a greater blow to local tourism than the rest of the country.

Tourism Ireland says 2009 was one of the most difficult years ever for the industry with a 13 per cent drop in visitor numbers to Ireland though the figures were worse in the Shannon Region.

The group which promotes Ireland overseas will join forces with Shannon Development and Failte Ireland to set out their marketing plans for 2010 at a briefing in the Radisson Hotel this morning.

Tourism Ireland Chief Niall Gibbons says Shannon Airport is the key driver for attracting visitors to Clare, though many of it’s current difficulties are due to the global downturn in the aviation sector
