Nothing snail’s pace about Doughmore Mollusc

The population of the tiny protected snail at Doonbeg Golf Course is thriving and has increased six fold.

More than 60 million of them now call the West Clare sand dunes their home – meaning there are more of them living on the course than are present in most other countries.

Dr Evelyn Moorkens who has monitored the progress of the minute mollusc for the past decade has praised the work of the Golf Club management in protecting the species .

In a report lodged with Clare County Council  regarding the retention of a contentious wall at the course Dr Moorkens says the clubs’ management has been “superb” and that “you can’t fault them”.
