Jury discharged in Derry Rape Trial

A new jury is being sworn in in the trial of a Clare man charged with rape and false imprisonment in Northern Ireland.

The 34 year old Ennis native is accused of assault, false imprisonment, indecent assault and rape, arising from an alleged incident involving a 45 year old woman, in his own home in Derry in September of 2008.

At Derry Crown Court yesterday the jury in the case was discharged for legal reasons but a new jury was expected to be sworn in to hear evidence.

The trial  heard the accused told police that he had met the woman outside a bar in Derry City and that relations between the pair were consensual.

The alleged victim has claimed the Clare man threatened and abused until she managed to escape from his home.
