Man killed on Ennis to Galway rail line

 

Irish Rail and the Gardai are investigating after a man was killed by a train on the Ennis to Limerick Rail line.

Its understood the 62 year old victim was moving animals on the track at Ralahine South in Newmarket-on-Fergus when he was struck by the oncoming train.

The driver alerted the gardaí and the emergency services but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem is expected to be carried out later today.

The Ennis to Limerick Rail line was closed for a short time but reopened after 11 o’clock and both the Gardai and Irish Rail are investigating the incident.

Its the second fatal accident involving a train in the Mid West over the weekend.

A 18 year old from Nenagh  died on Saturday night after he was struck by the Limerick to Ballybrophy train while walking on the railway line.

It is believed he may have been following a dog when the incident happened.
