O’ Donnell urges end to alcohol sponsored sports events

The head of A&E services at Ennis General and Limerick Regional Hospitals has called for an outright bank on sports sponsorships by drink companies.

Dr Cathal O’ Donnell believes that its time marketing which links sports to alcohol was removed entirely as has happened with tobacco.

Drink is the drug worst abused in the country today and the Chief of emergency medicine in the Mid West says it accounts for 80 percent of cases that present to A&E every weekend and far outweighs all the other drug problems the hospitals deal with
