Ordination of Killaloe Bishop

The Diocese of Killaloe will have a new Bishop at the helm in a few short hours.

Up to 15,000 people have gathered at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Ennis this afternoon for the ordination of Father Kiernan O Reilly.

At 2.30 a Honour Guard was provided for the Bishop-Elect by members of the Army Reserve with proceedings underway at 3 o’clock

Archbishop Dermot Clifford of Cashel and Emly, Bishop Willie Walsh and Bishop Noel O’Regan of Zambia will all be the consecrating bishops present while Cardinal Sean Brady, the Primate of All Ireland will preside.

Over eight hundred tickets have been issued to the various parishes of Killaloe  in Clare Tipperary, Laois Offaly and Limerick while among the other guests will be members of Father Kieran’s family including his parents.

The Taoiseach and the President will be represented by their Aide de Comps while among the other dignitaries set to attend include the Foreign Affairs and Defence Minister as well as the mayors of the various counties across the Killaloe Diocese.

During the ordination Fr. Kieran will receive a pectoral cross t worn by Bishop Michael Peter McMahon who was Bishop of Killaloe from 1765 to 1807; the shepherd’s staff)  given to Bishop Michael Flannery in 1861 by the Director and Professors of the Catholic University of Ireland and the Episcopal Ring  which is a gift to the new Bishop from his parents.

While Fr. Kieran’s vestments and Mitre were designed and made by Sr. Gabrielle Murphy of the Poor Clare Community in Ennis and Maureen Sanders of the Killaloe Apostolic Work Society.
