Householders Criticised For Leaving Taps Running During Big Freeze

It’s claimed housholders who kept taps running to avoid freezing pipes have done more damage to local water supplies than the big freeze over Christmas.

Members of the public are being reminded to continue to conserve water as the ongoing water disruption continues across Clare with overnight shut-offs still in operation in the Shannon and South East Clare areas, as well as parts of North Clare.

Last nights meeting of Ennis Town Council heard that the County Council dealt with up to 500 calls per day regarding water problems, with up to 50 calls per day going unanswered due to the huge back log in dealing with crisis enquiries.

The meeting was also told that water demand in the Ennis area increased from an average of less than 15,000 cubic metres per day to around 20,000 over Christmas due to a combination of leaks from burst pipes and people leaving water running to avoid the freeze.
