McCarthy Rules herself out of General Election

Shannon Councillor Patricia McCarthy has ruled herself out of the running for the forthcoming general election.

The long-serving local representative says that while she feels there is a need for fresh faces in Dail Eireann, she won’t be among them and will instead continue to represent Shannon and Clare on local authorities.

There had been much speculation that the former Mayor of Clare would contest the election as an Independent Candidate or for Labour as she had represented the party in her unsuccessful general election bids in the late 1970’s and early 80’s.

Patricia McCarthy’s profile has grown considerably in recent years on issues like Shannon Airport and government reform, but speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus, she confirmed she’ll be sticking with local politics.
