The figures from the Irish Aviation Authority reveal that just over 18 thousand  flights jetted in and out of the Mid West Airport in 2010 , down a third on the previous year and a 45 percent drop on 2005 numbers.

Overall there was a 3 percent falloff in aviation traffic across Irish skies last year – which is being put down to the economic downturn and the ash crisis.

Lillian Cassin of the Irish Aviation Authority says Shannon’s fared worse than other state airports but hopes 2011 will prove more profitable.
