The move forms part of efforts to entice more tourists to visit Clare.

President Obama’s predecessor in office, President George W Bush, famously visited the county in 2004 for the EU-US summit at Dromoland Castle, while John F Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon are among the serving US Presidents to have set foot on Clare soil.

The invitation stemmed from a motion raised by Independent Ennis Councillor and general election hopeful James Breen
