Kenny Defends Pension Stance

The Fine Gael leader is insisting the issue of his pension from his former position as a teacher and his decision not to take any payments is closed.

Fianna Fáil says Enda Kenny only agreed to the move when they accused him of hypocrisy over his statements on pension and severance payments.

At a press conference in Dublin this morning, Mr Kenny refused to be drawn on whether he came to the decision only when contacted by a national newspaper.

Meanwhile, Eamon Gilmore says the choice is now clear for voters – a single party Fine Gael government or a balanced coalition with Labour.

He says he doesn’t know why Labour’s support appears to have slipped 5 points to 19 per cent – according to the latest Irish Times poll but believes the election is not over.

Asked what he thought of Michael Martin accusing Enda Kenny of hypocrisy over their teacher’s pensions, the Labour leader said he would not get involved in name calling but that he didn’t believe TDs should double job.
