The review of Irish Waterways by the Environmental Protection Agency from 2007 to 2010 looked at over 17 hundred rivers and 2 hundred and 22 lakes.

It shows that 70 per cent of them are in good condition however, there were 20 seriously polluted river sites and 25 lakes including Ballybeg in Clare were classified as having poor or bad ecological standards.

However over all the number of seriously polluted waterways in Ireland has almost halved in the past three years.

But the  EPA says more money’s needed to ensure we meet targets set for 2015 and 2021.
