North Clare is hoping for a significant economic boost with news that the 6 million euro redevelopment of Doolin Pier has got the go-ahead.

Members of Clare County Council gave the project unanimous support at a meeting in Ennis last evening, despite the concerns of surfing groups who say the new pier, to be constructed by next year, could damage world renowned waves in the area.

But local businesses and the rescue services turned out in large numbers at the meeting to welcome what they hope will be a major boost for water safety and job creation in North Clare.

Mattie Shannon of the Doolin Coastguard rejected any notion that the new pier will damage surfing tourism off the Clare Coast.
