The revival of passenger numbers at the Mid West airport is being attributed to new European routes and the return of transatlantic services.

Following the official launch of their summer schedule – The Shannon Airport Director expressed her confidence that passenger numbers would increase despite the ongoing challenges in the market.

In a statement to Clare FM Mary Considine says the Mid West airports return to growth is largely due to securing new services to Shannon in the latter half of 2010; services which include the return of the Aer Lingus transatlantic service, a new Aer Lingus/Aer Arann regional service to Edinburgh and Gatwick, along with additional Ryanair routes to Fuerteventura, Nantes, Malaga and Palma-Mallorca.

Ms. Considine says she believes the worst is over for the embattled airport and expects an upturn in passenger numbers in the second quarter of this year – the first potential increase since 2008.
