County manager hopeful compulsory job losses wont be needed.

The Clare County Manager has expressed the hope that compulsory job losses won’t be required at the local authority, as pressure to cut public expenditure continues to mount.

The County Council’s Annual Financial Statement was presented at a meeting in Ennis last evening, and was prepared earlier this year to allow compilation of national reports to satisfy the IMF and EU under our bailout agreement.

With an annual turnover of 109 million euro – the council’s finances revealed a small annual surplus bringing down its overall deficit to 1.75 million euro due to what the County manager described as early cost cutting actions including a reduction of 144 staff.

Payroll costs for Clare County Council’s 840 remaining staff were 42 million euro and while Tom Coughlan explained staff cuts have occurred through retirement and not filling vacant positions, he can’t rule out more job losses.
