Paul Maskey of Sinn Fein has won the west Belfast by-election – to succeed Gerry Adams after he resigned to become a member of the Dáil.
Last night on his 44th birthday he took 70 per cent of the vote and had a majority of 13,000 over Alex Atwood of the SDLP.

Turnout was at only 37 per cent – a record low for a Westminster by-election in the North.
