The Clare based Irish Rural Dwellers Association has rejected claims that rural septic tanks are responsible for the pollution of the country’s rivers and lakes.
A new survey by the Environmental Protection Agency has found that 931 different waterways in Ireland are either moderately or badly contaminated with much of its being blamed on agricultural effluent or badly maintained municipal waste water treatment plants.
Ireland is already facing hefy fines polluting septic tanks and the Environment Minister is promising to fast-track tough new measures including inspections, registration and monitoring to crack down on those responsible.
