Bord na Mona has moved to try assured East Clare residents that the impact of the withdrawal of thousands of gallons of water from Lough Derg will be minimal.
The planned development of a reservoir in Co. Offaly to serve the drinking water needs of Dublin householders has been discussed by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on the Environment ahead of a visit to the site today.

It’s proposed that supply would be extracted from Lough Derg to supply this, but members heard that strict limits would be enforced should the project come to fruition.
However there are fears that the project if it goes ahead will adversely affect tourism and other water related activities in areas like Mountshannon
