Cameron to address Parliament over riots

The British Prime Minister David Cameron is to address the House of Commons today – which has been recalled from its summer recess following this week’s riots across the country.

Some courts in London, Manchester and Birmingham have meanwhile stayed open through the night to deal with dozens of people after four nights of rioting.

In London alone – the Metropolitan Police has arrested more than 800 people in connection with the violence, disorder and looting.

Almost 300 of them have now been charged.

Heavy rain in many places last night – along with a large police presence – helped prevent a fifth night of widespread rioting.
