Galway District Court heard he was arrested at Shannon Airport at 1.40 am yesterday (Monday) morning after arriving on a Ryanair flight from Grenada in Spain.

Garda Sean O’Murchu gave evidence of arresting the 53 year old and when charged and caution he made no reply.

The court heard that the accused lived in a commune on the side of a mountain in Grenada.

Judge Gibbons reserved his decision on an application for free legal aid and remanded Birtwistle in custody to Ennis District Court next Monday.
